Ballard Season 2 Confirmed! What's Next for Maggie Q in the Bosch Universe? | Prime Video News (2025)

The Bosch Universe Expands: 'Ballard' Gets a Second Season on Prime Video!

The gripping world of Michael Connelly’s crime novels is set to grow even further on Prime Video, as the streamer has officially renewed 'Ballard' for a second season. The series, starring Maggie Q as the tenacious LAPD Detective Renée Ballard, first debuted as a full binge release in July, and fans responded with overwhelming enthusiasm.

Lauren Lancaster, head of U.S. SVOD TV development and series co-productions for Amazon MGM Studios, shared the excitement: “We’re thrilled to announce that the Bosch universe will continue to flourish with a second season of 'Ballard' for our viewers around the globe. The response to the first season has been phenomenal, connecting deeply with audiences through its intense storytelling and remarkable performances by Maggie Q and the entire cast. Season two promises even more gripping moments for our fans.”

Just like its predecessors 'Bosch' and 'Bosch: Legacy,' 'Ballard' is adapted from Michael Connelly’s novels, with Connelly himself serving as an executive producer. Maggie Q shines as Renée Ballard, leading the LAPD’s cold case unit while navigating the challenges of earning respect in a male-dominated department. The first season also features strong supporting performances from Courtney Taylor, Michael Mosley, Rebecca Field, Victoria Moroles, Amy Hill, and John Carroll Lynch.

Connelly expressed his gratitude, stating, “It’s a tremendous honor to see my characters come to life on screen season after season, and it’s the fans’ dedication that makes this possible. I’m particularly thankful to Maggie Q for bringing Renée to life so authentically, carrying the character into the next chapter of her journey.”

The debut season of 'Ballard' was a strong performer for Prime Video, spending five consecutive weeks in Nielsen’s top 10 for original streaming series and amassing approximately 3.29 billion minutes of viewing during that time.

Co-showrunners and executive producers Michael Alaimo and Kendall Sherwood commented, “We’re thrilled to continue exploring Ballard’s world. Diving deeper into these characters and seeing audiences connect with their stories is incredibly rewarding. Working alongside such a talented and dedicated team makes this journey even more exciting.”

The series is executive produced by Michael Connelly, Michael Alaimo, Kendall Sherwood, Henrik Bastin, Jasmine Russ, and Trish Hofmann, with Theresa Snider of Hieronymus Pictures serving as co-executive producer.

But here’s where it gets controversial: Could the expansion of the Bosch universe overshadow new, original stories on streaming platforms? Fans have differing opinions, and we’d love to hear yours. Do you think revisiting familiar characters keeps storytelling fresh, or does it limit innovation? Share your thoughts in the comments!
